Vidalia ends season with loss
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Vidalia High finished its season with a 27-6 loss to Jena Friday in Jena.

The Vikings finished 3-7 on the season.

"They just wanted it a lot more than we did," said Vidalia coach Dee Faircloth. "After the Bunkie game the guys just seemed to pack it in."

Vidalia scored first against Jena, as Caleb Vines connected with Gary Stewart.

"I was thinking right there, 'Here we go,'" Faircloth said.

But the Giants came back with two scores to lead 14-6 at halftime.

Vidalia moved down to the Jena 1-yard line on its first possession of the second half, but fumbled the ball away to miss on that scoring opportunity.

The win was the first on the field for Jena, which got a forfeit against Block.

"That was a long time coming," said Jena coach Bernie Cooley, who played football under Faircloth at Vidalia. "That was the first time in a long time we played on a dry field and we're a passing team."

Cooley, who dismissed around 20 players from his team since spring, said his young team played hard all year long.

"They never dropped their heads and got after it from whistle to whistle," he said. "This gives us a little momentum for the offseason. We already picked up three players since the win. This gives us a lot of positives going into next year."
