Story Archives: Trinity seeking another title

Trinity seeking another title
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Trinity head coach David King will be seeking his third Class A state championship Friday in Jackson.

But it's not the two previous state titles King remembers the most.

"In 2003, Stevan Ridley had broken his foot and Chase Brown had torn up his knee," King said. "We lost 19-14 to Heidelberg and had seven turnovers. That's the game I think about the most. That's the game that keeps me coaching."

Trinity will be playing for its fourth state championship Friday as the Saints take on undefeated and defending Class A state champion DeSoto of West Helena, Ar.

The Saints defeated Riverfield Academy of Rayville 38-11 Friday to advance to the finals.

After a first quarter that saw Riverfield take an 8-7 lead, the Saints took over the ballgame.

"They dropped the point-after kick and their guy just picked it up and ran into the end zone," King said. "Our guys froze. We just kind of went south on that one."

Trinity scored twice in the second period for a 21-8 advantage as R.J. Fleming scored one of his four touchdowns on a 19-yard run.

Kent King returned an interception 40 yards for a score with 19 seconds remaining in the first half.

"We watched the films and that's a play they ran all year long," David King said. "Kent jumped on it perfectly. That was a huge play before the half."

The only scoring in the fourth quarter was a 35-yard field goal by Chas Moroney. King said the Thunderbirds are balanced on offense and have a solid defense.

"They make you go the distance of the field and they are not going to make mistakes," King said. Trinity enters the game with a 9-3 record.

"I'm so proud of this bunch," King said. "They are good kids and I'm honored to coach them. They took a few licks and a lot of people turned against them. They have responded and are playing well right now."
