CPSO Thanksgiving patrols slated The Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office will step up highway patrols over the long Thanksgiving holiday Wednesday afternoon through Sunday evening, Nov. 29.
"This is the start of the traditional family holiday season," noted Sheriff Randy Maxwell, "and we want the hundreds of travelers driving through and around Concordia Parish to make it to and from their destinations safely."
Deputies will be particularly watching for speeders, drunk drivers and those who are unbuckled -- especially those who fail to buckle up their children.
"Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death of children," Maxwell stressed. "Six out of 10 children who die in crashes are completely unrestrained. There's absolutely no excuse for this when it's so easy to put them in child passenger safety seats and buckle them up."
He added that nearly one-fourth of the 2,000 children who die in vehicle crashes annually are alcohol-related deaths. "It's bad enough that adults drink and drive. But it's insane, let alone criminal, when they drink and drive with their children in the car."
Maxwell pointed out too that along with holiday travelers, many people will begin their Christmas shopping the day after Thanksgiving, said to be the biggest shopping day of the year. "It's going to be extremely hectic on the highways and we're asking everyone to exercise extra caution and practice patience. Stay alert. Don't drive tired and don't be in a hurry. Allow extra time to get to your destinations -- and absolutely don't drink and drive." |
