Thanking God for our blessings By ANTHONY CATELLA Seminarian/Captain USAR Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church There can be no doubt that the national day of Thanksgiving has much influence upon our civic and religious mind.
Since Abraham Lincoln in 1863, each year the President of the United States has decreed the fourth Thursday in November to be the day on which the nation gives thanks to God for all its blessings.
The governors of the states in our union concur to the presidential proclamation.
We are united in thanksgiving to God for all our blessings. This unity of our Thanksgiving sets at naught whatever divisions we may have politically or religiously.
We are not just conservatives or liberals, Democrats or Republicans, Christians, Protestants, Catholic, Jewish or Muslim. We are Americans united in love for our country and in love for our common creator and father God.
Above us all is the divine government of Almighty God who sends forth his bounty and blessings upon us. He is our good and provident God. How? Just look where you live: America! Love who you are: an American.
All we need to do is obey the laws, pay our taxes and we can pursue our dreams of personal happiness. And if we are so moved, volunteer to be of service to our country and in this sixth Thanksgiving since Operation Iraq Freedom, in this eighth Thanksgiving since Operation Enduring Freedom our thanks goes to those in all the services of our Armed Forces.
God is always our shield and defender. This knowledge has a happy effect upon us. It reminds us that we can be thankful to a God so good and great. Render thanks and praise to God, America, and God will in his graciousness, bless America. |
