New board members named to Vidalia recreation board The Concordia Parish Police Jury on a 4-3 roll call vote Monday night opted to replace two members on the Concordia Parish Recreation District No. 3 Board of Directors.
On a motion by Willie Dunbar, the Jury reappointed Ed Bruce and Melvin Dobson but replaced Fred Marsalis and John Turner with Windell Millicks and George Barnes.
Supporting Dunbar's motion on this matter were Dunbar, Carey Cook, Joe Parker and Jimmy Jernigan. Voting against were Randy Temple, Whest Shirley and Red Tiffee. Juror Jerry Beatty was not in attendance and President Melvin Ferrington votes only to break a tie.
The recreation board had sent a letter asking the Jury to reappoint Bruce, Dobson, Marsalis and Turner.
"There was no cause at all to remove Fred Marsalis and John Turner," juror Whest Shirley said after the meeting. "This is the worst possible time to change board members with the work underway to build a multi-million dollar recreation complex."
Shirley said Marsalis "has spent 35 years of his life working with the youth of Vidalia and Mr. Turner has always had the kids' best interest at heart. My opinion is the Jury made a mistake by removing these two men."
On another matter, Ferrington said Tuesday that Davidson Trucking and a driver will soon receive a letter from the Jury requesting that they cease parking an 18-wheeler on a parish road. Ferrington also looksx into complaints concerning dogs and horses on Airport Road.
"We do have a leash law but no enforcement on it and no where to impound dogs," said Ferrington.
He also said a vacant mobile home on the corner of Guido and Sage will be condemned.
In other business, the Jury:
-- Authorized the repair of the canopy at the east end of the new courthouse building.
-- Voted to pay $2,260.37 for linen for the parish jail at the request of the sheriff's office.
-- Approved occupational licenses for Black River Antique Hardwoods LLC, 2732 Hwy. 129, Monterey, and Phyllis A. Bunch, Ready Decks, 521 Patsy Brown Rd., Monterey.
-- Okayed transfers totaling $50,000 each from the Sales Tax Fund to the Solid Waste Fund, the Highway Maintenance Fund and the Drainage Maintenance Fund.
-- Voted to look into a complaint involving a junk yard on Black Bayou Road. |
