Funeral services for Master Sgt. Joseph John Snyder, 74, of Natchez, who died Friday, November 27, 2009, surrounded by his family, were held Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 2 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with Dr. Roy Tidwell officiating.

Burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Mr. Snyder was born June 7, 1935, in Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph J. Snyder and Evelyn Cooper Snyder. His military career spanned 20 years with tours of duty to basic training in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1954; Greenville Air Force Base, from 1954 to 1959 and Berlin, Germany from 1954 to 1962. He was in Berlin when the Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961. Service also included The Pentagon, Washington, D.C., from 1962 to 1966; Randolph Air Force Base, Texas from 1966 to 1969; Binh Thuy, Vietnam from 1969 to 1970; and Scott Air Force Base, Ill. from 1970 to 1974.

During his career with the Air Force, he received the Bronze Star medal, Meritorious Service medal, Air Force Commendation medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit award with V. Device Air Force Good Conduct medal with three Oak leaf Clusters, Good Conduct medal with two Bronze Loops, Army Occupational medal, National Defense Service medal with one Bronze Star, Vietnam Service medal with two Bronze Stars, Air Force Longevity Service award ribbon with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Evelyn Knoltz, Mary Ingram, Gertrude Bryan, Sara Olszwski, Alice DeNordis and Alberta Lasley; and father-in-law Doyle Murray.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lenell Murray Snyder; two daughters, Debra Snyder McDonough and husband, Pat, of Natchez and Shari Snyder Cupit and husband, Guy, of Vidalia; three grandsons, Matthew Ross Richardson, Patrick Anthony McDonough V and Joseph Ryan McDonough; one granddaughter Amanda Gaile Richardson, all of Natchez; mother-in-law Ethel Murray, of Natchez; one brother, Edwin Snyder and wife, Geri, of Monroeville, PA, one sister, Dorothy Elnyczky of Pittsburgh, PA; one sister-in-law Gail Tew and husband, Windell, of Natchez; two brothers-in-law, Billy Joe Overby and wife, Sandy, of Natchez, and Lane Murray and wife, Elena, of Jackson; 40 nephews and nieces and a number of great nephews and nieces.
