Trinity wins state title
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
R.J. Fleming rushed for 104 yards on 19 carries and accounted for three touchdowns as Trinity thrashed defending champion DeSoto (Ark.) 37-7 for the Academy A title before an estimated 1,200 at Harper Davis Field.

Trinity led 14-7 at halftime.

"We were kind of feeling each other out in the first half," said Trinity coach David King. "Both teams were nervous. We went up 14-0 and then they put together a good drive which kind of woke us up. We put on our rally caps and came out dominating in the third quarter."

Trinity, top-ranked in Academy A all season, finished 12-3 and won its second MAIS crown in four years.

The Trinity losses came to Brookhaven, River Oaks and Centreville.

"I think our schedule had a lot to do with it," King said. "DeSoto had not seen the types of teams we have seen this year."

Second-ranked DeSoto (13-1) had won 22 straight games.

Fleming, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound senior, threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Daggs, who injured his knee in the contest, and scored on runs of 5 and 8 yards, giving him 36 touchdownsa on the season.

R.J. is one of the best I've coached," King said. "He's got God-given ability, quickness and speed."

The Thunderbirds got a 7-yard scoring pass from quarterback Cody Manning to running back Dylan Cruz.
