Monterey's Lady Wolves captured their first championship in their own tournament for the first time since 1996 by defeating Adams County Christian School 38-33 Saturday in the finals.

"The girls came out pretty focused and we played good defense and played really hard on both ends of the court," said Monterey girls coach Cary Shively, who claimed his first school title as coach. "The girls did a good job of rebounding the basketball, as well. It was good to win it."

Monterey's boys finished second in the tournament, falling to Sicily Island in the finals.

In the girls contest, the first quarter was a defensive struggle as Monterey led 4-3.

The Lady Wolves took a 12-10 lead into halftime.

ACCS outscored Monterey 13-10 in the third period to take a one-point lead into the final period.

Monterey outscored AC 16-10 in the final stanza.

Kendall Lipsey led Monterey with 12 points, while Brooke Baker added nine.

"One of our goals before the year started was to win our tournament," Shively said. "The girls had it in their minds and went after it. We just have to continue playing hard."

Monterey defeated Sicily Island on Friday, while ACCS advanced with a win over Harrisonburg on Thursday.

The Lady Wolves defeated Cathedral Saturday afternoon, while ACCS eliminated LaSalle.

Monterey's boys faced Delhi Charter Saturday after its game with St. Joseph of Plaucheville on Friday was canceled because of the snow.

The Wolves defeated the Eagles 47-39, leading 20-13 at halftime.

Josh Chapman led Monterey with 15 points.

"We didn't shoot the ball real well, but we made up for that in other areas," said Monterey coach Eric Richard. "Right now we're playing good enough to give us a chance to win in most games."

Monterey fell to Sicily Island 50-28 in the finals.

The Tigers led the Wolves 24-14 at halftime.

Cade Crum led Monterey with 12 points.

Monterey will be competing in the Harrisonburg Tournament beginning Thursday.
