Vidalia boys win Ronnie Brown Memorial

Vidalia High's boys teased the century mark twice as the Vikings kept the Ronnie Brown Memorial Tournament championship trophy at home for the third straight year.

Vidalia defeated Tensas Parish 97-59 Thursday and cruised past Ferriday High 98-50 Saturday night.

"We were able to use our size advantage and our outside game was working," said Vidalia head coach Robert Sanders.

Vidalia used its size advantage against the Trojans, as alley-oop passes to Torrey Dixon and Gary Stewart helped the Vikings jumped out to a 16-0 start.

Ferriday did not score its first basket until Markelle Bell hit a short shot with 2:05 remaining in the opening period.

Vidalia had four players score in double figures, led by Dixon wtih 26 points. Stewart netted 22. Louis Whitley provided 11 points from the outside, while D.J. Polk scored 10 points from under the goal.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Ted Gullage, who finished with 17 points on the night.

Gary Willis added 16 points.

Named to the all-tournament team for Vidalia were Stewart, Dixon, Polk, Eric Bell, Quartrell Thomas and Whitley.

Willis and Gullage made the team from Ferriday.

Ferriday's girls defeated Vidalia 66-26 in the first game of the tournament and cruised past Tensas Parish 67-43.

"We needed a boost to get our spirits back up," said Ferriday girls coach Lisa Abron. "We started off with good pressure defense and that set the tone."

Chante Poole scored 21 points against Tensas, while Jasmine Butler added 16 and Deonka Birdon 13.

The Lady Trojans led Vidalia 12-10 after one quarter, but forced several turnovers in the second period to jump out to a 31-17 advantage at halftime.

Ferriday was led by Butler with 21 points and T'Keyah Fletcher with 20. Birdon also scored in double figures with 10.

Gabby Wagoner led Vidalia with 10 points, while Elizabeth Cupit added eight.

Ferriday landeds Poole, Butler, Birdon, Fletcher and Raven Lewis on the all-tournament team.

Ferriday's boys fell to Tensas 75-69 in the first day of action.

Ferriday scored 24 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth, but Tensas came out on top after a strong performance by Roderick Jones, who scored 24 points.

Michael Jones added 15 points for Tensas. Daniel Jackson and Chris Smith each tallied 10 points.

Ferriday was led in scoring by Gullege, who scored 20 points.

Willis had 11 points and Charles Chandler finished with 10 points.

Vidalia and Ferriday were scheduled to play in the Ferriday Tournament this week.

That tournament has been scheduled because of lack of teams. Vidalia will play at Ferriday Friday.
