Story Archives: Public hearing on recreation complex

Public hearing on recreation complex
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Recreation District No. 3 board president Mark Archer said the board will hold a public hearing in March to discuss the recreation complex.

Archer said he wants an opinion from the people on the possibility of extending the current 3.98 mills recreation renewal tax from 10 years to 30 years.

The 10-year renewal was passed in July of 2006 with only three percent of voters casting ballots, passing by a 124-49 margin. There are seven years left on the current tax.

Recreation District No. 3, which was created by ordinance of the Concordia Parish Police Jury on May 28, 1958, covers all or part of seven precincts in Vidalia.

"The USDA wants to go with a 40-year loan and we can't proceed unless we can guarantee the income," Archer said. "Once we get matching grants, we may not need to go but 21 years or so, but we have to show them we have the money."

In September, the recreation board signed an agreement with Bryant Hammett & Associates to proceed with the building of a recreational complex near Wal-Mart in Vidalia.

Archer said he believes the complex will be ready for play by the summer of 2012.

"We want a good turnout at this public hearing and we want people to voice their opinion," Archer said.
