Ferriday Chamber elects new officers

The Ferriday Chamber of Commerce elected officers for 2010, the final year for the chamber before merging with the Vidalia Chamber of Commerce to form the Concordia Parish Chamber of Commerce in 2011.

Marie Cowan will serve as president in 2010, while Billy Rucker is vice-president. Jeanne Merchant is secretary, while Lloyd is treasurer.

The decision to merge came last month after representatives of the Ferriday and Vidalia chambers and Concordia Economic Development Executive Director Heather Malone reviewed completed surveys and discussed the suggestions provided by the memberships. The survey revealed that 100 percent of the respondents favored a parishwide chamber.

Nefferitti Rhodes of the Census Bureau in Northeast Louisiana talked to the chamber about the 2010 census.

"The main thing we want to let everyone know is that it is safe, important and easy," Rhodes said. "It is much simpler than before and you don't have to put any personal information such as social security."

Rhodes said the census forms will be sent out in mid-March with postage attached.

'It will only take about 10 minutes," she said. "There is $400 billion allocated annually through the United States for grants and infrastructure and the most of the questions governments ask has to do with the population count."
