Huntington teams fall in district openers

Huntington School opened it MAIS District 6A with a pair of losses to Briarfield Academy Monday in Ferriday.

Briarfield's girls defeated Huntington 41-30.

The Lady Rebels led 12-10 after one period and 20-17 at halftime.

Briarfield outscored Huntington 13-9 in the third period and 8-4 in the final stanza.

Abi Brown led the Lady Hounds with 14 points on the evening. Allie Boothe added seven points for Huntington.

Huntington's boys pushed Briarfield into two overtimes before falling 67-65.

Briarfield led 13-9 after one period and 28-23 at halftime.

Huntington got back in the game with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Rebels 21-12.

The score was tied 55-55 at the end of regulation as the Hounds had three players foul out and were left with four on the floor.

With two seconds remaining in double overtime, and the score tied 65-65, Briarfield's Ridge Creech hit the game-winning layup for the Rebels. Kevin Brown had a career high 31 points to lead the Hounds. Jeremiah Powell and Garrett Vinson added 13 points each.

"To lose with two seconds left in double overtime playing with four players, I couldn't be any prouder of these kids for the heart and tenacity they showed," said Huntington coach Edwin White. "It was truly amazing."

Huntington hosts Chamberlain-Hunt Friday.
