Funeral services for Mrs. Maxine Bass Newman, 80, of Monroe will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 21, 2009 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe with Rev. David Worthington officiating. Interment will follow at South Central Baptist Church Cemetery at Wisner.

Mrs. Newman was born on March 21, 1929, in Wisner and passed away Friday, December 18, 2009, after a lengthy illness. She attended school in Wisner and graduated from Wisner High School in 1946, as salutatorian of her class.

She began her career with Bell South as an account clerk in Jackson, MS, on June 17, 1946. She then married Percy Lee Newman, of Wisner on August 26 of the same year. They moved to Ferriday and raised three children: Vicki Lynn, Eddie Max, and Ernie Lee. She resumed her career at Bell South and retired in July of 1977.

Mrs. Newman moved to Monroe in 2004 to be close to her children. Although she adjusted to living in Monroe, she always called Ferriday her home, and missed her family and friends.

Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her parents, Finice Simeon and Minnie Lee Humble Bass; son, Eddie Max Newman; brother, Finice Simeon Bass, Jr.; and sister, Lvonne Ferrington.

Survivors include her son, Ernie Newman and wife Kathy of Monroe; daughter, Vicki Wilson and husband Ermis of Sterlington; six grandchildren, Nancy Newman Kemp and husband Sandon of Vidalia, April Newman of Vicksburg, MS, Jake Newman and wife Patty of Cedar Park, TX, Sam Newman and wife Amanda of Cedar Park, TX, Allison Wilson Jones and husband Josh of Bryant, AR, and Matt Wilson and wife Misty of Monroe; ten great grandchildren; sister, Nila Faye Snead and husband John of Monroe; sister-in-law, Adrenna Bass of Monroe; and her best friend and canine companion, Sugre.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Jake Newman, Sam Newman, and Matt Wilson; great grandson, Blake Walsworth; nephew, Rick Snead; and Charlie Jones.

The family would like to thank her caring neighbors at Chauvin Retirement Community for always looking out for her, and Agape Hospice; especially her nurse, Margaret Butler, for her excellent care, concern, and friendship to her, as well as to her children. Our sincere thanks are given to all of her sitters, especially Janice Ceasor of Ferriday and Cindy Dalgo of Bayou Jack, LA.

Merry Christmas, Mama. You will be an honored guest at the most glorious celebration of all -- surrounded by your Savior, your family, and your friends.

There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign forever and ever. Revelation 22:5.

Memorials may be made to North Monroe Baptist Church Building Fund.
