Christmas message: Join together with glad and sincere hearts

By Rev. Simeon R. Green III
We live in a world that expects that we know where we are heading. Whether driving across the country or hiking in the woods, we need to know which way to travel.

The journey of the Wise Men began with the star - they were focused on the light. Journeying in the light requires effort, determination, joy, tears, thanksgiving, falling down, getting up - continually seeking and following the light.

As followers of Jesus, we are all on the same path today. We are each seeking to follow the bright morning star, Jesus. There are people on this path whom we cannot even begin to imagine - rich and poor, powerful and powerless, famous and unknown - from every people, nation, and tongue on earth. The path that leads to life may be narrow, but is also very crowded. Praise God, that He is big enough for us all!

The Wise Men followed the star, found the child, Jesus, and worshipped Him. They were changed by the journey and changed by the destination. The beauty of the Christmas season is that it illustrates the way in which, even as we are following Christ, He is walking alongside of us.

Even as Christ is leading the way, He is journeying with us. Even as we are journeying through unfamiliar territory, Christ is beside us, illuminating our understanding.

During this season in which we often think generosity requires us to find the perfect presents for our families and friends, let us find creative ways to join together as a community greater than our own individualism, so that we can work together, worship together, play together, eat together with glad and sincere hearts.

"Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth Peace, Goodwill Toward men!" (Luke 2:14)

(Editor's Note: Rev. Green is pastor of the Doty Road Church of God in Ferriday.)
