CCCF assists 1,014 for Christmas; more than $10,000 in donations received The Concordia Christmas Charity Fund was able to assist 1,014 people in need of a little help this holiday season with about $10,000 received in local donations.
According to organizer Rena Pitts of the Ferriday Chamber of Commerce, the holiday organization distributed toys or gift cards to 580 children. Additionally, 200 families and 72 elderly received a bag of groceries containing sugar, flour, canned vegetables, rice and a small ham.
Volunteers bagged the groceries and the toys for the children on Friday afternoon. On distribution day Saturday, Pitts said the line began forming about 7:30 a.m.
The fund, operating for the 21st year, assists needy families with gifts and food in time for Christmas.
Each applicant is verified for eligibility by the Office of Family Services in Ferriday.
All final donations will be acknowledged in The Concordia Sentinel in the December 30th edition.
The fund was established in 1988 following a Christmas holiday scam when outside promoters raised money for the needy and skipped town. The Concordia Sentinel spearheaded the effort to organize the present Christmas Charity effort.
One hundred percent of money donated goes to Concordia needy and all charity committee members work on a volunteer basis. The Ferriday Chamber of Commerce is the chief sponsor of the project. |
