FEMA grants $555,635 for new courthouse work
The Concordia Parish Police Jury received official notification Monday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved a grant of more than $500,000 for upgrades to the new courthouse, including a new roof.
"We met with representatives of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security today and they said our project has been approved and that funding is immediately available," Jury President Melvin Ferrington said Monday.
Total project funding is $555,635 and will provide protection to 109 windows and doors as well as the courthouse roof.
Tony Russell., Acting Director of the Louisiana Transitional Recovery Office, notified the Jury by letter that the "wind retrofit project will provide protection against wind speeds of 120 miles per hour by the use of impact resistant rated materials on the windows and doors, and a roof upgrade in order to bring the roof above code."
"We plan to advertise for bids for engineers and architects in January," said Ferrington. "The project will include a pitched roof on the courthouse."
Ferrington said the Jury was notified by phone on Friday that the project had been approved before meeting with state officials on Monday.
"We've asked for the money up front because we are not in a position to finance the project and then wait for reimbursement," said Ferrington. "We were told that this will not be a problem."
He said work to obtain the grant began following Hurricane Gustav in 2008 |
