A lot on the line for Tigers, Miles So if you told me on September 25 that LSU would be playing Penn State in a bowl game I would be feeling really good about it.
LSU was 3-0 with wins over Washington, Vanderbilt and Louisiana-Lafayette.
Penn State was also 3-0 with wins over Akron, Syracuse and Temple.
The Nittany Lions had only given up 20 points and were looking like the class of the Big Ten after Ohio State had stumbled against Southern Cal.
But Penn State fell to Iowa 21-10 on September 26.
The Nittany Lions then lost to Ohio State to fall out of the BCS.
LSU lost to Florida, Alabama and Ole Miss.
But the matchup is still a classic.
Two of the nation's storied powers will meet for just the second time in the 64th Capital One Bowl. Penn State (10-2) and LSU(9-3) will be meeting for the first time since their 1974 Orange Bowl clash, which resulted in a 16-9 Nittany Lion win to clinch the program's first 12-0 campaign.
The No. 13 Nittany Lions are playing in their fourth different New Year's bowl game in the past five years.
Penn State's last game was a 42-14 win at Michigan State on Nov. 21. The Tigers posted a 33-30 overtime win over Arkansas on Nov. 28 in their last regular season game.
Penn State has a 50-13 (79.3) record since the start of the 2005 season, the nation's eighth-best record over that span. LSU is No. 9 with a 51-14 mark (78.4) over the past five seasons. |
