Story Archives: 'Tipsy Taxi' for New Year's Eve

'Tipsy Taxi' for New Year's Eve
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Most governmental offices and some businesses will be closed Friday, New Year's Day, when a long holiday weekend celebration begins.

As holiday celebrations continue through New Year's, the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office will also continue its increased highway patrols, especially targeting impaired drivers and speeders, as well as seat belt violations for adults and children.

"Drinking and driving just won't be tolerated," stressed Sheriff Randy Maxwell. "When you choose -- and it's definitely a choice -- to get behind the wheel after a night of drinking and partying, you endanger your own life and, even worse, endanger the lives of other innocent people."

To help avoid this problem, the Sheriff's Office will once again offer the "Tipsy Taxi" service on New Year's Eve to those who have been drinking and have no designated driver.

"If you've been drinking and need a ride to get yourself home safely, please call us -- we'd much rather take you home than have to notify your family following a crash," Maxwell added. Call 318-336-5231, 757-3162 or 386-2200.

During the holiday week and weekend, deputies are intensifying enforcement of speed limits, child passenger safety laws, seat belt laws and drunk driving laws during their patrols of the parish's highways. Drivers found driving above the legal blood alcohol limit will be prosecuted, and drivers speeding and/or failing to restrain their child passengers will be ticketed.

"We want all of our residents to have a safe holiday -- and that means safe roads for every single driver and passenger," Maxwell noted. "We're stepping up patrols in order to cut down especially on DWI offenses. I know that everyone wants to have a good time -- but having a good time doesn't mean jeopardizing others' safety on the roads."
