Local bankers are cautiously optimistic that 2010 will be a better year for consumers and businesses and all agree that good weather for farming and more activity in the oilfield will help improve the local economy.

Clerk of Court Clyde Ray Webber said legal work involving oil and gas leases in the parish basically stopped this year.

"The people that come in and check on oil leases have been almost non-existent," said Webber. "Before the economy took a downturn we were pretty busy in that area. But it's been quiet for a year and half. We haven't had oil activity. We've seen downturns, but none to last this long."

Jess Horton of D&D Drilling said those in the oilfield business are waiting to see what happens in Washington during the next few months before investing.

"We're hearing that more taxes are going to be put on the oil and gas business and until we know for sure things are not looking good," said Horton. "Maybe by the middle of next year we'll know. Everybody is just kind of scared right now about what's going to happen."
