No news is not good news What an exciting day January 7 was — that is until the BCS game came on and a certain Shreveport sportscaster spoiled the entire day by saying his report of LSU offensive coordinator Gary Crowton leaving was being denied by Tiger head coach Les Miles.
Word of advice that I should also take as well - until something comes out on LSUsports.net or on Dandydon.com, take any rumor with a grain of mud left on the Capital One Bowl field.
But in Shreveport sportscaster Tim Fletcher's defense, he was just relaying what someone had told him.
But in this day of chat boards and forums, you put a match to something controversial and it's going to light up the world.
Here is what Fletcher wrote on Tigerdroppings.com (and kudos to Fletcher for taking the time to explain the entire scenario).
"Yesterday afternoon, a prominent LSU Alum/TAF member left a voice mail for me at work. I returned his call where he told me: "Fletch… I have it on the highest authority that Gary Crowton will be dismissed by Friday." "THIS Friday? That's a little odd… why wait a week after the bowl game?" "It's taken a little time for the TAF to convince Alleva a move had to be made… even he knows something has to be done now." "Hmm. Well…" "If you have to use my name, go ahead—-I'd rather you not because (——-)…" "Don't worry. I'm going to make some phone calls… check with some folks in Baton Rouge and go from there." "Sounds Good. Thanks, Fletch… I've never steered you wrong before, you know. And I wouldn't have called you if I wasn't certain this time." "I appreciate it… thanks (_____)… talk to ya' later." So, on my show this morning one of the regular callers asked about LSU and their local recruiting. "Oh, James… you're always looking for some good news about LSU, right?" "Yep." (side note: James hoped Les and Gary would be gone after season) "There is a rumor—-granted a strong rumor regarding Gary Crowton being dismissed as early as Friday." "Really!" "Here's the deal… I spent about 2.5 hours yesterday chasing this and Ryan Mallett rumors down. A very reliable source, who has never led me down the wrong path, said the TAF and Joe Alleva have gotten together… all are unhappy with Gary as the OC and he will be dismissed on Friday. " I received a text back from the LSU Sports Information Office that said, "Just a rumor as far as I know." If Gary is still around after Friday, my source has been incorrect for the first time… if Gary is dismissed, my source is on target." There. In a case of burying the lead, I did hear back from a school official today, who had spoken to Les this afternoon about his very issue —-he says coaching staff will remain as is. Take that for what it is."
So that created a bigger buzz than if Tiger Woods were hosting a Miss America pageant.
Actually, I hope LSU officials were taking note of the excitement when everyone believed Crowton was being shown the door.
C'mon, can that many Tiger fans be wrong in their thinking? Obviously, if you want the Tiger nation to get excited about the 2010 season, you get rid of Crowton and make Billy Gonzales the offensive coordinator.
One other note regarding Louisiana collegiate coaches. Nicholls State named Charlie Stubbs its new head football coach. Stubbs has more than 31 years of coaching experience and 22 on the collegiate level.
One of the finalists for the job was former Louisiana-Monroe head football coach Charlie Weatherbie.
I cannot help but wonder if Weatherbie self-destructed in Louisiana after not voting LSU in his final AP Top 25 BEFORE the Capital One Bowl.
Weatherbie was the lone coach on the panel not to vote LSU among the top 25 after the regular season.
And one more thing ... I watched a few college basketball games this past weekend and saw players holding up their jerseys after big plays and pointing to themselves. And I'm thinking, "Where is the call ing attention to yourself infraction here?"
Parting shot: There actually is a playoff system in college football - it's called the SEC. |
