Concordia crop production meeting January 29 A new year brings new hope, new beginnings, and hopefully a better year than 2009. Concordia Parish will hold its annual crop production meeting, January 29, starting at 8:15 at the First Baptist Church in Monterey.
Area farmers will have the opportunity to learn crop variety recommendations, weed control, insect and disease control from LSU Agriculture Specialists. This program has been planned to meet the farming needs of Concordia Parish farmers.
County Agent Glen Daniels said a special thank you goes out to Ag Advisory Committee (predominantly farmers and agriculture consultants) whose input was used to plan this program. There is an increase interest in rice production which has been added to the afternoon session.
The City of Vidalia's Economic Development asked the LSU AgCenter to present some data on growing, cost, etc. of sweet sorghum for ethanol production. Dr. Mike Salassi, Dr. Sonny Viator, and Dr. Wink Allison will be at this meeting to provide some insight on growing sweet sorghum. Farmers can also renew their pesticide card by attending the morning session.
The afternoon session which is entirely rice production is planned for rice farmers and those who may be interested in growing rice. A program agenda is included for farmers and any interested individuals. For additional information, please call (318)336-5315 or (318)336-7084.
