Two die in one-vehicle accident

A rare February snowfall in Concordia Parish is believed to be a major contributor in a single vehicle crash west of Ferriday that killed two, including a child, and injured three others, all from Tennessee.

Louisiana State Troopers responded to the crash Friday around 4:30 a.m. on U.S. Hwy. 84 east of La. Hwy. 566.

State Police identified the passengers as Bradley L. Dickson, 4; Ronald E. Dickson, 58; a 9-year-old juvenile; Stephanie Vincent, 28; and the driver of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban, Bretton A Dickson, 32, all of Shelbyville, Tenn.

Ronald Dickson died in the crash, while four-year-old Bradley Dickson died later at Riverland, according to the State Police.

The Chevrolet was west bound on U.S. Hwy 84 when the driver lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle entered Cocodrie Bayou and became completely submerged.

One of the men walked to a nearby residence, and that homeowner notified the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office, State Police said.

Rescuers - including sheriff's deputies, Wildlife and Fisheries agents, Fire District II, divers, Louisiana State Police, and others - worked through the morning to find the missing 4-year-old boy. The child was located at approximately 8:30 a.m. and was immediately transported to Riverland Medical Center.

The juvenile and Vincent received minor injuries and were transported to Riverland Medical Center for treatment. None of the occupants were wearing a seatbelt. Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending.

According to John Polumbo, executive producer of WKRN-TV in Nashville, and a friend of the family, the group was going to Deville to visit a sister of one of the passengers for Valentine's Day. Polumbo said it was the first time the group had made the trip.

The crash remains under investigation. Troop E Troopers have investigated eight fatal crashes for the year of 2010, resulting in ten fatalities.
