Catfish Classic set
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Vidalia Catfish Classic promises good food and good baseball Friday and Saturday at the Vidalia Dixie Majors Park.

"This tournament has a lot of local flavor," said Vidalia coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir.

Hoffpauir was still changing the bracket Wednesday because of rain and Vidalia High's basketball team playing for a state championship Friday in Lafayette.

"That's a first, but it's a good problem," Hoffpauir said. "We're excited for the basketball team."

Thursday's games were cancelled. Jena will face Monterey Friday at 5 p.m. Oak Hill meets Cathedral at 7:15 p.m.

On Saturday, Jena meets Oak Hill at 11 a.m. The Giants and Cathedral tangle at 1:15 p.m. Vidalia gets into play Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Vikings face Cathedral Saturday at 5:45 p.m.

Not only is getting the tournament in important because of the number of rainouts already, Hoffpauir said it's crucial financially.

"It costs us $300 for a bus driver to go out of town and the costs of umpires is astronomical," Hoffpauir said.

Joining host Vidalia are Cathedral, Monterey, Jena and Oak Hill.

All games will be seven innings or a two-hour time limit and admission is $5.

Catfish and french fries will be available, along with hamburgers, hot dogs, etc.

The Vidalia Invitational will be held next week beginning March 18 and will include Vidalia, Minden, West Feliciana, Trinity and Oakdale.

Vidalia fell to Cathedral, 10-6 at Liberty Park in Natchez on Monday.

Cathedral scored nine runs in the fourth inning — all with two outs.

Vidalia scored four runs in the fifth inning.

Seth Thompson walked with the bases loaded before Seth Barlow singled in another run. B.J. Neely followed with a single and Devin Barnes drew a bases loaded walk.

B.J. Neely drove in another run with a single before pinch hitter Devin Barnes drove in the fourth run of the inning with a bases loaded walk.

The final Viking run came on a Nate Bozeman groundout.

Jamale Davis and John Brixey doubled for the Vikings.

"I thought we swung the bat well considering the layoff we have had," Hoffpauir said. "I saw some good things and bad things. We got two outs on three pitches in the fourth inning and then they scored nine runs and it was over with. Seth (Thompson) did a good job, but just got tired."

The Vidalia Invitational is scheduled for March 18-20 at the Vidalia Dixie Majors baseball field.

On Thursday at 6 p.m., Minden faces Trinity, which is now coached by former Huntington coach Mitch Ashmore.

On Friday, West Feliciana takes on Minden at 5 p.m., followed by West Feliciana against Vidalia at 7:15 p.m.

Saturday's action has Minden taking on Vidalia at 11 a.m.

Trinity faces West Feliciana at 1:15 p.m.

At 3:30 p.m., Vidalia faces Oakdale, while Oakdale takes on Trinity at 5:45 p.m. in the final game of the tournament.

Vidalia was scheduled to play Monterey Wednesday. That was was already re-scheduled after being rained out two weeks ago.

Vidalia hosts Jena March 22 in its first District 3-3A contest of the season.

The Vikings travel to Buckeye on Thursday, March 25.
