Soybean, rice acreage on rise Concordia Parish farmers, hoping to rebound after two disastrous farming seasons, began planting corn in the Ferriday and Lake St. John areas during the past few days as dry, warmer weather prevailed.
"Because of the rains we've been a little behind," said County Agent Glen Daniels, "but we are beginning to plant corn and farmers are working to 'burn down' (spray chemicals) fields for weed and grass control."
Daniels predicted an increase in soybean and rice acreage this season due primarily to higher market prices for those commodities.
"I think soybean acreage will be up to about 90,000 this year, about 10,000 acres more than last year," he said.
