Dixon named 3A MVP

For the second straight year, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A Player of the Year is from Vidalia High.

Viking senior forward Torrey Dixon received the honor, one year after teammate Gary Stewart was named best in Class 3A.

The 6-foot-3 Dixon averaged 26 points a game for the Vikings, who defeated Carroll High for the state championship on March 12.

"I think we were more hungry this year," Dixon said. "I also feel like I was a better player this year. I am honored with being MVP, but the most important thing was winning the state championship."

Dixon also led the Vikings in rebounds (12.0) and blocked shots (4.8).

The 6-foot-4 Stewart was also named to the first team.

Stewart averaged 17 points a game, 10 assists and had 7.7 rebounds a contest.

Abbeville coach Berwick Hamilton was named 3A Coach of the Year. Sanders received that honor last season when he led the Vikings to the state championship game.

The honorable mention list was not available today (Wednesday).
