Story Archives: Raines named Baker coach

Raines named Baker coach
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Former Natchez High head footbal cach Robert Raines was hired as the new Baker head coach, replacing Tommy Spillman, who spent two years as head coach.

Raines is a Greenwood, Miss., native who played quarterback at Alcorn from 1982-85.

His only previous head coaching experience on the prep level was at Natchez High. Raines led Natchez to an 11-3 record and a berth in the South State Championship game in 1997-98. He was the head coach at Natchez for four years.

"I saw where Baker has eight home games next year, so I am going to have to adjust that schedule," Raines said with a laugh.

Baker is building a new track and redoing its footbal stadium.

"There are some good things going on over there," Raines said.

Raines applied for the Vidalia High head football position, which went to assistant coach Gary Paul Parnham.

He also expressed interest in the Ferriday job before taking the Baker job.

Currently, Raines is the Athletic Business Manager and Chief Operating Officer for the Athletic Department at Alcorn. He served as ASU's athletic director from 2002-06 then spent two years at Florida A&M in athletic administration before returning to Alcorn in 2008.

A 1982 graduate of Amanda Elzy High in Greenwood, Raines had assistant coaching stints at Greenwood High, Biloxi High and North Natchez.
