Monterey 4-1 in district

Jorge Gonzalez singled Ashton Holland home in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Monterey a 10-9 win over Avoyelles Charter in Monterey Thursday.

"That was a big win for us," said Monterey head coach Eric Richard. "Avoyelles has a good baseball team and this was important for us in district. Both teams played extremely well. We had 14 hits on the day. I don't know if we have had that many hits over the past couple of weeks."

Eighth-grader Dillion Smith led the Wolves with three hits in five at-bats. Nick Blake also had three hits.

"We haven't always handled adversity well, but the kids came through in this game," Richard said.

Monterey improved 4-1 in district with a 13-3 win over Harrisonburg.

Ross Lipsey got the win as Harrisonburg managed only two hits off the Wolves.

Dillion Smith had three hits, while Hunter Frey singled twice and Lipsey tripled. Tyler Trant added a double.

Monterey hosts Glenmora Thursday.
