What's with the quarterback situation?

The LSU spring game is in the books and Tiger coaches are singing praises on what was accomplished.

So why are a lot of Tiger fans feeling so glum.

Two letters.

Jordan Jefferson had a horrible outing Saturday and Jarrett Lee guided the other team.

I hate to say it, but I think the best quarterback out there was Russell Sheppard.

And why in the world do they not let the guy throw a pass?

I remember seeing high school clips of Sheppard and was amazed at his arm strength and accuracy.

He has not thrown a single pass in a game and just ran the ball from the quarterback position Saturday.

He doesn't lack confidence (I'm not so sure you can say the same right now about Jefferson and Lee). And he's a great vocal leader (see previous parenthesis).

I'm just not amazed at Lee's arm strength or Jefferson's accuracy.

Sure, Lee had a decent spring game going 10-of-20 with that seemingly weekly pick six.

But something seems to happen to this guy when there are 90,000 people in the stands and he needs to make a big play.

Jefferson supposedly was a different quarterback heading into the spring game, but once again looked confused and missed several receivers.

And what happened to all the early spring practice talk of how good Chris Garrett was looking.

Garrett was 1-for-4 for 14 yards in the spring game. Hey, T.C. McCartney, who will never see the field, completed one pass.

What worries me is that Garrett will be thrown into the fire like Jefferson was and not be able to gain some early confidence.

You have to know that head coach Les Miles was hoping Jefferson would put on quite a show and that everyone would be feeling good about the Tiger offense in the hands of the inconsistent signal-caller who will be a junior next season.

I doubt Miles was spending a lot of time on the Tiger Rant forum on Sunday.

As a matter of fact, Dandydon.com ran a survey asking fans who should start at quarterback.

As of this morning, Jarrett Lee led the poll at 50 percent, followed by Garrett at 23 percent and Jefferson at 18 percent.

Lee? And Tiger fans are wondering about Miles' mental state?

I think the key to the season is getting the ball into the hands of Sheppard and Rueben Randle. But that's going to take a quarterback with an accurate arm and so far I am not getting goose (OK, Tiger) bumps over that scenario.

LSU spent a lot of time on the running game this spring and it showed in the spring game.

We knew, especially in the Miss-Lou area, the type of running back Stevan Ridley can be and heard all the talk about Michael Ford, which he backed up Saturday.

But if LSU does not have a quarterback who can consistently hit his receivers, defenses are going to put six or seven in the box and dare the Tigers to run the ball.

I'm excited about Sam Montgomery and Craig Loston on defense.

LSU has some playmakers and those playmakers need to be given a chance to make those plays.

That means getting the ball to them.

That means finding someone to get the ball to them.

Thank goodness there's summer drills. Wonder if Lee and Jefferson have time to attend that Manning Passing Academy in Thibodeaux?

They can bring Sheppard along to run the ball back and forth to them.
