Former Waterproof mayor on trial A number of witnesses, including former town employees and a former top town official, testified against former Waterproof Mayor Bobby Higginbotham on Tuesday during his trial for malfeasance, public contract fraud and felony theft.
Higginbotham was indicted by a Tensas Parish Grand Jury last year and was cited for a number of violations in a stinging Legislative Audit.
Dist. Atty. James Paxton began a probe into the mayor's office after the Tensas Parish Sheriff's Department was notified during the summer of 2008 that the water to the town was going to be turned off by its distributor because the company had not been paid for the service. A State Police investigation on numerous citizen complaints against former Police Chief Myles Jenkins, who also faces charges, resulted in allegations of possible wrongdoing against Higginbotham.
A six-member petit jury was selected on Monday.
