Legislators say state must 'do more with less' Sen. Francis Thompson of Delhi said state offices will have to continue to "do more with less" as the Legislature, which convened on Monday, looks at budget cuts statewide due to a revenue shortfall of an estimated $1.7 billion.
Gov. Bobby Jindal said Monday that by the end of this budget cycle "we will now have reduced 6,000 funded government positions since we've taken office. This budget reflects a drop in funding of over five billion dollars – over 18% from last year."
"Education will be spared moreso than any other department," said Thompson. "We're not looking at drastic layoffs, no great number of furloughs, but we're taking a conservative approach to government, are not planning to raise taxes nor fees and will see department's cross-utilizing their staffs. We're expecting people to multi-task. Some state offices will shrink because we're not replacing retirees."
