Work on Ferriday water system continuing Preparations to connect town lines to the new water plant were completed Wednesday night in Ferriday, while work was underway today to shore up the intake structure at Old River which town officials feared would fall into the river on Tuesday.
The water supply will be cut off to Ferriday customers tonight as the new water tank is put on line.
Mayor Glen McGlothin said a wooden board at the end of the catwalk at the intake structure snapped and the end of the walkway is leaning at a 45-degree angle. He and town officials were walking to the end of the catwalk Tuesday, which runs from the levee out to Old River, but were forced to rush back when the catwalk began swaying. A barge with a crane was brought in to reinforce the structure. McGlothin said he notified the Homeland Security of the situation.
"If that would have fallen into the river, the main pipeline would have snapped and Ferriday would not have had any water," McGlothin said. "The temporary boil water notice would have been the least of our problems."
