Story Archives: Senate candidate Melancon campaigns in Concordia

Senate candidate Melancon campaigns in Concordia
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon said he remembers driving over the Mississippi River Bridge and looking down at nothing but cement on the Vidalia riverfront.

He got a up close view of one of the many buildings on the riverfront Thursday after speaking at the Bryant O. Hammett Vidalia Conference and Convention Center.

"I am thrilled to be here and see this wonderful building and how great this riverfront now looks," said the Napoleonville native, who currently represents the 3rd Congressional District.

Melancon is now a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by David Vitter.

The Vidalia stop Thursday was part of his "Jambalaya and Jobs Tour." Melancon's wife, Peachy, was also on hand for the public forum.

"I'm from Napoleanville, but what happened with Hurricane Katrina and Gustav and Ike affected the whole state," he said. "North Louisiana had to make a lot of sacrifices."

Melancon said he would like to see Congress return to the old ways where everyone got along and worked together.

"I remember working with Bryant (Hammett)," Melancon said of the former state representative, "when everyone knew every member and worked together. You didn't always agree, but you always wanted to do what was best for Louisiana."

Melancon, who calls himself a "Blue Dog Democrat," told the crowd his grandson, Jack, was in Washington D.C. for the annual Easter Egg hunt earlier this month on the White House lawn.

"He could have cared less where he was, he just wanted to do what Jack liked to do," he said.

Melancon said he also does not get caught up in the politics.

"I voted against health care, but I sat down and talked to the President about it and he understood," he said.

Melancon said he is a different person from U.S. Sen. David Vitter, the man Melancon is challenging.

"I don't want to be governor or president, I just to do a job because our current senator is ineffective," he said. "He doesn't have the respect of the people or other legislators. He keeps talking about the President, so he surely is not going to get what he wants for the state by doing that."

Melancon said Louisiana has been hit hard by the recession and the partisanship in Washington is making it worse.

"We need a different approach," he said. "We need more bipartisan, more honest, and with a lot more common sense. I'm a small businessman and a fiscal conservative. We need to get spending and the deficit under control and create more economic opportunity for Louisiana by cutting taxes on small business and investing in job training and college opportunity."

Melancon has represented Louisiana's Third Congressional District since 2005.

"I'll work with anyone, or I'll stand up to anyone," he said. "It's the right thing to do for Louisiana. That's something about me that won't every change."
