Only two citizens showed up for the first of two public forums Thursday night where officials discussed the proposed recreation complex to be built near Wal-Mart in Vidalia.

The second public forum will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Police Jury meeting room at the courthouse. The district board is seeking comments from the public on the complex and the proposed extension of the current 3.98-mill tax from 10 years to 40 years.

"Usually the people who are against something are the ones who show up, so this may be a good sign," said engineer Bryant Hammett said, who displayed drawings of the complex at the hearing. "Communities around here and all over the state of Louisiana are going to be very envious of what you are doing."

Hammett said if the tax is approved on May 1 a preliminary architectural report will be provided. He said the report will be several pages thick and include environmental work and other requirements mandated from USDA.
