Sadie Jones, 84, has served Clayton for 46 years Clayton Town Clerk Sadie Jones -- who received a 45-year pin last week from the Louisiana Municipal Clerks Association -- said the day she moved from Kenner to Clayton in 1955 was one of the happiest days of her life.
"Kenner was too busy and I don't like the city," said Jones, who is 84. "We lived on Airline Highway and there were big trucks and heavy trucks going by all the time. It was so quiet when we came to Clayton that I couldn't sleep for several months. But I got used to it."
Jones's husband, Edgar, was transferred from Kenner when he worked for Herring Tank Line in the early 1950s.
Jones became Clayton's first full-time town clerk in 1963 when James McKinney was mayor, the first of 10 mayors she worked for during the next 46 years.
"Clayton was a lot bigger and it was thriving," Jones said. "But we lost the box factory (American Box Company in the mid-80s) and a lot of people with that."
