Ferriday seeks emergency funding for intake structure

The Ferriday Town Council passed an emergency resolution Tuesday seeking $250,000 in Louisiana Community Development Block grant funding to repair the intake structure on Old River.

"This is an extreme public emergency," said Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin during the town's regular meeting Tuesday night. "If it falls into the river it will costs us $1.25 million. We can get $250,000, I don't believe we can get $1.25 million"

A wooden board at the end of the catwalk to the structure, located off the Old River levee, snapped last week and the end of the walkway was leaning at about a 45-degree angle, with drums of chemical leaning to the side.

There was also a 12-inch separation in the water pipe line.

"If that falls into the river, the main pipeline would have snapped and Ferriday would not have had any water," McGlothin said. "The temporary boil water notice would have been the least of our problems."
