Story Archives: Monterey falls to Harrisonburg

Monterey falls to Harrisonburg
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Harrisonburg scored on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Monterey 10-9 Tuesday.

The Wolves had a chance to clinch second place in district behind Oak Hill, but now finish in a tie for second at 6-4.

"We just have to get ready for the playoffs now," said Monterey coach Eric Richard. "We could have helped ourselves in seeding, but we just didn't make the plays. That took better advantage of their opportunities. We made too many baserunning errors and didn't get the timely hits when we needed them. But that's baseball."

Monterey is currently seeded No. 24 in Class B.

The Wolves fell to Avoyelles Charter 10-8 Thursday before defeating St. Joseph Plaucheville 14-10 Monday in a non-district game.

"When we pitch decent, we're a good ball club," Richard said. "When we don't we're not. That was terrible Monday. We walked or hit 12 batters. We led 14-6 going into the bottom of the seventh and let them right back in it."
