Story Archives: Monterey falls to Downsville

Monterey falls to Downsville
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Monterey High fell to Downsville 10-4 in a Class B first round contest at Downsville Thursday.

The Wolves, 9-12, were ranked No. 24 in the power ratings, while Downsville is No. 9.

"They had a good team," said Monterey coach Eric Richard. "I didn't think we played too poorly. Our scouting report said if we left the ball in the middle of the plate they would hit it and hit it hard. I thought we pitched to them OK. When we made a mistake, they hit it. We had a couple of errors, but they didn't snowball like they have in some other games."

Both teams ended up with eight hits in the contest.

"The difference is they had their hits with runners on base," Richard said.

Monterey trailed 6-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

"We kept the ball game competitive, it just got away from us in the last couple of innings," Richard said.

Dillion Smith and Nick Blake led the Wolves with two hits each. Ross Lipsey and Ashton Holland both singled.

"I thought we made some improvement from last year to this year," Richard said. "We were better at the plate than I thought we would be. But our pitching and defense is not where it needs to be. I think we're coming along, we just need to gain more consistency."
