Senate bill expands DNA database District 34 State Senator Francis Thompson (D-Delhi) is leading an effort to give law enforcement officials more authority to collect DNA samples from accused criminals.
Senate Bill 544 by Thompson expands the list of crimes that subject suspected offenders to DNA collection and inclusion in the national and state database known as CODIS (Combined DNA Index System).
"It is important to give our law enforcement officials and prosecutors every available tool to crack down on criminals preying on our communities, our families and our children," Thompson said. "The state and national DNA database has proven to be an effective tool in our crime-fighting efforts and expanding that database will provide us with even more options in those efforts."
SB 544 proposes to expand current law to allow the collection of DNA samples from those persons arrested for certain misdemeanor charges under certain circumstances. The misdemeanor charges include identity theft, inappropriate contact with a teacher, contributing to delinquency of a minor, hate crimes and inciting a riot crimes.
As of March 2010, the DNA CODIS database housed approximately 214,000 arrestee and 112,000 convicted offender profiles at the state and national level. In 2009, investigators pursued 702 leads provided by the database.
The full Senate approved Senate Bill 544. The measure next moves to the House for consideration. |
