Another Leftist courtesy of Obama
President Barack Obama's nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court was a wise move for Obama if his intention was to appease his base of political support.
That would be the radical Left wing of the Democratic Party.
A Leftist in the truest sense of the word, Kagan was nominated to succeed Justice John Paul Stevens, who is retiring from the bench. Stevens is a liberal, so Kagan's appointment, if approved by the Senate, would simply result in a liberal replacing another liberal on the nation's highest court. Accordingly, Kagan's appointment would not alter the Supreme Court's fairly conservative bent.
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Kagan is a former law clerk for Justice Thurgood Marshall, and she clerked for Judge Abner J. Mikva of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.
A former dean of Harvard Law, Kagan taught at one time at the University of Chicago Law School. She also is a former associate White House counsel for President Bill Clinton.
Kagan has no judicial experience, meaning she has never served as a judge. Her tenure as Solicitor General extends no further than January 2009, when Obama nominated her to that post.
To surmise, Kagan's credentials are paper thin.
Senate Republicans are expected to oppose Kagan's nomination. They should vehemently oppose it based not upon Kagan's liberal track record but upon the fact that she is not qualified to serve on the Supreme Court.
However, we expect Kagan's nomination to be approved by the Senate because Democrats control 59 seats in the Senate. There simply are not enough Republicans to block the Kagan nomination.
That's a shame, but it is not the end of the world. |
