Haney to be honored during Soul Survivors Fest

A Mississippi Blues Marker commemorating the legendary Haney's Big House in Ferriday will be unveiled during the town's Soul Survivors Festival on May 22.

Haney's, a cafe/lounge owned by Will Haney, was one of the African-American clubs on the "chittlin' circuit" of years ago, which was frequented by artists such as B B King and Fats Domino.

The marker will be unveiled on the lawn of the Delta Music Museum.

The festival will also feature Team Ghost Riders, which features monkeys riding dogs. Also performing will be Hezekiah Early, Jimmy Anderson, Lil Poochie, YZ Ealey, and several other acts.

There will also be kids activities, art, and a tribute to Spencer Williams, Jr's work in films and on Amos and Andy., according to Tommy Polk.

In the 1940s and 1950s, there was no place more famous in Ferriday than Haney's nightclub on the 500 block of Fourth Street (now E.E. Wallace Blvd.)

While Mississippi bluesmen came to town and honed their craft before they became internationally famous, hundreds would come from miles around to listen, drink, eat, dance and have a good time.
