State champs!

Ferriday has been known for its past football and basketball success.

Now the town can brag about another kind of title.

Ferriday was named the state winner in the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Cleanest City Contest Friday, beating out Amite and Arcadia.

"We're very excited," said Ferriday Garden Club president Sherrill Sasser. "It took a lot of effort from a lot of people."

Ferriday entered the cleanest city contest last year, finishing third in district.

"I really thought everybody was going to quit the Garden Club when it was brought up," Sasser said. "We found sidewalks people didn't know we had in town. And this year we decided to try it one more time."

Ferriday won district this year, beating out Farmerville and Jonesboro last month.

"I really thought after that we had a chance to win state," Sasser said. "We got a lot of great pointers from the state judges. They told us we had come a long way."

Sasser said the town will have at least one sign to proclaim its title.

"I think it is wonderful," said Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin. "A lot of people don't realize how much this helps the image of the town. Now it's up to us to keep it up. We know it can be done with some effort."
