John Felix Anders
Longtime Ferriday resident and businssman John Felix Anders died Sunday, May 16, 2010. He was born in Oak Grove, La., on April 16, 1921, the son of the late Hettie Butler and Felix Hughes Anders.
Mr. Anders attended Oak Grove High School and graduated in May 1938. He worked at Redmon Mitchner Store during his high school days. After graduation he attended LSU and was a member of the ROTC. He moved back to Oak Grove and worked with the Louisiana Soil and Water Conservation as a surveyor. He married Elizabeth Ulrich Miller in 1946 and moved to Ferriday in 1947 at which time he went into business with his brother-in-law Calvin Mack. They owned and operated Mack and Anders Culverts, Inc. which remained open until 1991.
He was a longtime member of Sevier Memorial United Methodist Church where he served on the board for many years. He served as chairman of the building committee for the new church which was constructed in 1963. He was a member of the Ferriday Rotary Club for 50 years and served as president at one time. He was a member of the Ferriday Chamber of Commerce, the Ferriday Quarterback Club for which he was the second president and the Gladevale Hunting Club in Tensas Parish.
Visitation was held Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at Sevier United Memorial Methodist Church from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at the church today, Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ray Varnado officiating. Burial followed at Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Comer Funeral Home.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years; his parents; four sisters, Hazel Anders Todd of Memphis, Tenn., Louene Anders Belote of Memphis, Leona Anders Abernathy of Pulaski, Tenn., and Minnie Evelyn Anders King of Oak Grove.
Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Anders Nowlin and husband, Louis Mitchell "Luckey" Nowlin III, of Pawleys Island, S.C.; one son, John Felix "Andy" Anders Jr. and wife, Nancy Ratcliff Anders, of Clayton; five granddaughters, Amy Nowlin Cunningham and husband, Michael, of Edgewater, Md., Holly Nowlin of Baton Rouge, Bridget Anders Milliken and husband, Tom Terry, of Ferriday, Rachel Ratcliff Anders and Emily Cooper Anders, both of New Orleans; and two great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Jonathan Cunningham of Edgewater; special friends, Lucy Brown, Inez Gilmore, Susie Clark, Louisiana Home Health staff, especially Chan Bethel and Tammy Lord, Riverland Medical Center staff, Dr. Gremillion, Dr. Dulam, employees of Colvin's Pharmacy and Arthur and Ruby Conner.
Pallbearers were nephews, Allen Brown, Robert Guida, David Miller, Doug Miller, Lyle Miller, Randy Miller, Thomas Nelson and Burton Wade.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Claude Current, Charles Renfrow, Joe Holmes, Cecil Ezell, Dick Junkin and Denny Braswell.
