Story Archives: Predictions come earlier and earlier

Predictions come earlier and earlier

Remember when the College World Series would be over before football magazines hit the shelf?

Now the magazines are hot off the press soon after the Final Four wraps up.

I remember waiting on Street and Smith's (loved the cover shot of a football player with his helmet on and no face bar) up until two or three weeks before the season started.

At least the stories were up to date.

Nowadays, with the number of key injuries during the spring and summer and the number of college players hanging out at bars after 1 a.m., the entire depth chart can change in a matter of days.

And even if those magazines came out the day before the season-opener, don't count on everything going by design.

Who figured on TCU and Boise State BOTH being in the BCS last year?

And there were so many close calls. After Sam Bradford went down for Oklahoma, Texas still almost blew it against Nebraska in the Big 12 title game. And if not for the big paw of Mount Cody, the Tide may have gone down against Tennessee.

The popular pick this year has Alabama playing Ohio State for the national championship.

Ohio State has to lead the league in number of times picked to win a title. And number of times not to win a title after getting there.

A BCS title game certainly will not be just that if there is not an SEC team involved.

But this is not your Tim Tebow SEC this year.

I'm still waiting on the controversy of all controversies to finally end the BCS for good.

And that would happen if a one-loss SEC champion played for the national championship over an unbeaten Boise State, Utah or a TCU.

Or better yet, Boise and TCU finish unbeaten and there aren't any unbeaten teams from the BCS leagues?

Horned Frogs against Broncos for the championship? Oh my.

While Alabama is the consensus pick, there are still some big holes to fill for a team that has to travel to Arkansas and South Carolina and has a brutal road date at LSU the game after going to Tennessee. Throw in home games against Penn State, Florida, and Auburn, and one loss is more than likely with a 10-2 regular season a better bet.

Florida - sans Tebow - has road games at Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida State, the neutral site game against Georgia, and home games against South Florida, LSU, and South Carolina. Should be another fun and entertaining year. Just give me a few weeks before coming up with my Top 10. Who knows what will happen before then.
