Crops get 'million dollar rain

"It was a million dollar rain," said County Agent Glen Daniels Monday after an inch to an inch and a half of rainfall was recorded in Concordia Parish over the weekend.

"It had been awfully dry and many farmers couldn't do anything without this much needed moisture," said Daniels. "It's really a blessing."

Daniels said rice has been growing well during past weeks because "the farmers flushed it. Some fields were flushed three times. It's expensive but it kept the crop growing."

All crops benefited from the rainfall, he said, while cotton and soybean farmers will now be able to seed land that had been too dry to plant.

Daniels said the parish's 112 beef cattle producers also benefited. Cattle ranching in the parish has an estimated gross value of $5.8 million, according to the LSU AgCenter's Ag Summary report.

"The rain will make the pastures grow and will help the hay fields," he said.
