Affidavit to be filed relating to Vidalia Police Department search A federal affidavit addressing probable cause in the seizure of evidence Tuesday from the Vidalia Police Department will be filed in federal court in Alexandria but it is expected that the document will be sealed, sources told The Sentinel at presstime today.
Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) along with assistance from the Louisiana State Police executed a search warrant Tuesday morning at the police station.
Federal agents "were on the scene as it relates to an ongoing criminal investigation," said Sheila Thorne, Special Agent with the New Orleans Division of the FBI. She said she could offer no additional comments although she pointed out that no arrests were made.
Vidalia Police Chief Tapper Hendricks did not comment on the matter.
Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland said he did not know what agents were searching for, but confirmed that Vidalia police personnel, with the exception of a dispatcher, were asked to leave the building while federal agents were at the station.
"I don't know anymore than that," said Copeland. "I do know that a dispatcher continued to work inside the building, that calls were answered, that patrols continued and that the police force was out doing their work."
A federal source said this morning that agents had to show that they believed they would find "evidence of a crime" in obtaining a search warrant signed by a judge. That warrant was presented at the police station when agents arrived, said the source.
A spokesman at the federal court clerk's office in Alexandria said shortly before noon today that no affidavit relating to the Vidalia Police Department had been filed at that time but noted that numerous news organizations are inquiring about the matter. |
