Vidalia faces challenging schedule
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Vidalia High head coach Gary Paul Parnham knows his team should be ready for district play consdering the pre-district schedule, which consists of three teams which advanced to the second round of the playoffs last year.

Vidalia hosts its annual Vidalia Jamboree on August 28 with Ferriday, Block, Madison Parish and Tensas Parish competing.

The Vikings open the season against Block in Jonesville.

The Bears lost to West St. John in the second round of the Class A playoffs last season.

"Block is returning a number of good players and will be a real challenge for us," Parnham said.

The Vikings host Ouachita Christian a week later. The Eagles fell to St. John in the second round of the Class A playoffs.

Vidalia visits rival Ferriday on Sept. 17.

The Trojans return most of their starters from a team that lost out to Farmerville in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs.

"Ferriday is loaded this year," Parnham said. "And Ouachita Christian is always tough."

The Vikings play at Avoyelles on Sept. 24 in their district opener before hosing Buckeye on Oct. 1.

Pearl River visits Vidalia on October 8 for Homecoming in a non-district game.

Vidalia visits Bolton and Bunkie the next two weeks before hosting Marksville on Oct. 29 and Jena on Nov. 5.

"Our district competition is going to be strong this season," Parnham said.

Parnham has been having offseason workouts five days a week.

"I've been pleased with the participation," he said. "We've had about 95 percent show up and that's going to pay off. We just want them to keep working hard."

Parnham is also putting extra emphasis on junior varsity this season.

"We've got six games scheduled and are looking for two more," he said. "This will be freshman and sophomore players who are just an injury away from playing on Friday nights, so we want them to be ready."
