Public defender workload on the rise

When Derrick Carson began working as the public defender for the seventh judicial district ten years ago, the office was small and the work load was heavy.

"No one else wanted this job," said Carson, who is now the chief public defender for Concordia and Catahoula parishes. "The pay was so low. The case load was so high."

"There was only one public defender and one administrative staff when I took the job, and it was that way for several years."

Now the offices are a little bigger, but with the number of cases the public defender's office oversees on the rise, the work load is heavier than ever.
