Crops need rain; drift damaging rice Parish crops are in critical need of rainfall, County Agent Glen Daniels said this week, adding that there's a growing problem for rice farmers -- chemical drift.
In particular, damage from herbicides containing glyphosate occurs when the chemical is sprayed on a soybean field and then drifts onto an adjacent rice field. Rice can not tolerate the chemical when the crop is in the reproductive stage, said Daniels.
But the lack of rain and the problems associated with drift are a part of everyday life for a farmer -- staying in tune with new farming trends based on market prices and science, but always dependent on Mother Nature.
"We are in desperate need of a universal rain," Daniels said this week. "We probably need about two inches to keep these crops growing. We made a big turnaround when rains ended a drought recently, but now we're at another juncture where rainfall is needed."
