CPSO prepares for active July 4th holiday weekend Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office deputies will be out in full force during the 4th of July holiday period, cracking down on both impaired and distracted drivers from Friday, July 2, through Sunday night, July 4th.
The annual Lake St. John Flotilla brings extra traffic to the highways, as well as the lake, and the CPSO will have extra deputies monitoring both the roads and area lakes throughout the weekend.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 6,000 people died in 2008 in crashes that involved distracted driving. That figure correlates to a town approximately the size of Vidalia.
During the July 4th holiday period alone in 2008, there were 491 traffic fatalities in the country, with 43 percent of that number due to drunk driving.
