Concoridia 12s begin regional play The Concordia 12-year-old All-Stars face Ville Platte Friday at noon in its first game of the Dixie Youth 12-year-old South Regional in Metairie.
Concordia finished second in the district tournament in Mangham, splitting a pair of games with unbeaten Morehouse Thursday.
"We looked as good as we looked all year in the first game and as bad as we can look in the second game," said Concordia coach Whest Shirley. "We wanted to win district, but our goal was to reach State."
If the Concordia 12s win Friday, they will play at 5 p.m. Saturday. A loss will mean a 2 p.m. Saturday game.
The winner of the South regional will meet the North regional winner in Alexandria in a best-of-three tournament for the state title.
Morehouse is competing in the North regional.
The Concordia 12s exploded for 14 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cruise past the Monroe Nationals 17-3 and ensure a spot in the state tournament.
Drake Bergeron delivered a 3-run home run to key the hitting barrage.
The contest was tied at 3-3 after four innings.
However, Concordia exploded for eight runs in the top of the fifth.
Concordia scored six more runs in the top of the sixth, with three of those runs coming on a home run by Cole Cangemi.
Bergeron and Cangemi also had doubles in the game while Chandler Grayson also hit a double.
Tyler Cothern, Jake Barlow, Grayson, Cangemi and Bergeron all had multiple hits for Concordia, which finished with 15 hits on the night.
The Concordia 12s blanked Winnsboro 10-0 on July 14.
Kade Passman and Cole Cangemi combined to pitch a one-hitter with eight total strikeouts and just two walks.
Concordia got all the runs they needed in the first inning on a three-run home run by Chandler Grayson.
Tyler Cothern went 3-for-3, while Grayson was 2-for-2.
Jake Barlow and kade Passman each went 2-for-3 as Concordia finished with 11 hits in the game and took advantage of five Winnsboro errors.
Passman was the winning pitcher as he pitched the first two innings. Cangemi came on to pitch what turned out to be the final two innings.
The Concordia Parish 10-year-olds were eliminated on July 14 after falling to the Monroe Americans 11-5.
The Concordia 10s finished 1-2 in the tournament.
But after that, they had just one hit the rest of the game.
Concordia rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first inning as Lee Lancaster singled, Cameron King doubled, Reid Richard walked, J.R. Davis got hit by a pitch.
Christian Fort walked and Trey Buckles doubled. to put the Concordia squad up bya 5-3 margin.
But a Richard double was the only hit Concordia would manage the remainder of the game.
The Monroe Americans took the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning when they scored four runs to go up 7-5. They added four more runs an inning later to put the game out of reach. |
